Gentle Love

I don’t believe in “tough love.”

We are all different. Every person is unique, and if they so choose to have children, they will become unique parents and have unique children. So of course we can’t all parent the same way. Does that mean there is no ideal way of parenting?

When I think of a “blanket” approach to parenting…something that would probably work for every family, I think of parenting the way Jesus would. And when I think of how Jesus would parent, I can only imagine him being loving, respectful, and gentle. He wouldn’t hit, reprimand, or punish. He wouldn’t leave a child alone in tears. In every image I have in my head regarding Jesus and children, I see him full of love and gentleness.

You don’t have to be Christian to take this pledge. You only have to promise to yourself to try your best to be gentle, respectful, and loving to children, most especially your own. And you have to promise that you will be gentle with yourself, and forgive yourself when you aren’t perfect.

To take the pledge, add the button below to your blog and leave a comment on this page. Thank you for being gentle with children.

I love the idea of this button. I definitely commit, and I need the reminder. I love the idea of thinking to how Jesus did and would children. I’ve put your wonderful button here until I create a prettier page to showcase all my lovely affiliations:

    Thank you for creating this!

Oh, thank you Lauren. And I changed the code to the one you gave me.

This is really wonderful. I’m hosting a Carnival of Gentle Discipline April 26-30, 2010 and I’d like to refer to this pledge. If you’d like I have a similar theme and button that says I’m a Gentle Parent.

I just found your blog via MMB. I’m on a quest to find other crunchy LDS moms and found your gentle love button.

I SO need to connect with other LDS parents who parent gently since I don’t have many RL examples.

Thanks for being gentle and sharing the message!

Hi! I have tried to put the “Parent with Gentle Love Button” on my site. I copy the code and it doesn’t work. I end up with a bit of text and no button. I am totally new to site building (currently in the process of getting my first site up and running) so don’t know if I’m doing something wrong?

It’s a GREAT button! Your help would be greatly appreciated!

The problem is probably the smart quotes ” vs. straight quotes ” — just try replacing all the quote marks in a simple text program or in Blogger.

Here’s how I have it on my site:

Hopefully you can just copy and paste.

Oops! The code didn’t show up, and I see WP is auto-changing all my quotes to smart quotes. Oh, well. You can just replace the quotes, though, for Blogger blogs.

Hi! Thanks for trying to add my button! Hm, I don’t know why it isn’t working. My friend helped me with the code, and she’s good at this stuff, so I thought it was fine. I do see that some of the quote marks look backwards. I did just try it on a blogger blog of my mine, and it worked except there was something extra with it. I’ll try to figure it out.
